Next Guild Meeting – Tuesday, February 2nd
Feb 1st, 2010 by daveyknits
This month: Illusion Knitting!
Heather Storta is a knitting instructor at Yarnhouse in NoDa. She’s been knitting for over 6 years, and is currently working through the TKGA Master Knitter Program. She passed Level 1 in September of last year, and is currently working on Level 2. Over the last 6 years, she has experimented with many different knitting techniques, taking the attitude that one should be a fearless knitter.
Heather is a Georgia Tech grad with a Chemical Engineering degree and worked as a High School Science teacher prior to having children. She is now a stay-at-home mom who homeschools her two little boys. She knits, reads, plays drums and designs knitting patterns in her free time.
Our program tonight will be on Illusion knitting, a very interesting colorwork knitting technique. If you would like to try the technique out during our program, be sure to bring two highly contrasting colors of dishcloth cotton and appropriately sized needles.
See you there!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Hi Everyone!
Our next meeting will be Tuesday, January 5th. Our guest speaker will be Michael del Vecchio from Universal Yarn. He is the author of ‘Knitting with Balls: A Hands-On Guide to Knitting for the Modern Man’ and a regular columnist with ‘Knit ‘n Style’ magazine. His writing and published designs have appeared in various magazines and publications.
In addition, Michael is a skilled technical editor of knitting patterns. He is the primary technical editor for ‘Knit ‘n Style’ magazine and has worked with various individual designers, authors, yarn companies, and publishers to edit and size patterns and draw charts and schematics.
For our program, Michael will be teaching us another colorwork technique – Fair Isle! For this program, we have a little homework before the meeting.
Materials for the event are:
1 16” circular needle
2 colors of a dk weights of wool or a wool blend (Dolce Merino is great, of course)!
Students should choose which color should be the motif color and which color is the background color (or the MC), then, cast on 92 sts onto the circular needle (I like a long tail cast on, but its students’ choice).
We’ll pick up right there with starting to learn the two handed technique.
The meeting, as usual, is at Providence Baptist Church, 4921 Randolph Rd, 28211. Park on the Sardis Road side & go in the covered entrance. Turn right through the rotunda to find the stairs or elevator, go to the second floor and take the short flight of stairs to the upstairs parlor.
Show and tell will be from 6-7 pm and the program will begin at 7.
See you there!
Pictures in Color — Intarsia
Long time knitter and Charlotte Purls member, Connie Byrne, will teach us another form of colorwork — intarsia. Learn how to juggle multiple colors to create pictures, letters, or blocks of color. Bring two or more colors of yarn (dk or light worsted suggested), appropriately sized needles, and a chart of a motif you would like to try.
Connie suggests that you have the base of your motif knit up to the row before the color change (intarsia pattern) begins. This will save time and ensure that everyone gets a chance to try out the technique during the meeting. Also, if you’re using a chart, “be kind to your eyes and blow the darned thing up!”
The meeting, as usual, is at Providence Baptist Church, 4921 Randolph Rd, 28211. Park on the Sardis Road side & go in the covered entrance. Turn right through the rotunda to find the stairs or elevator, go to the second floor and take the short flight of stairs to the upstairs parlor.
Next Guild Meeting – Tuesday, August 4th
Jul 31st, 2009 by daveyknits
Have you ever stood there with a handful of brightly colored skeins, trying to visualize how the colors will work together in a finished piece? Then this program is for you.
Color Theory
Lindsey Goodwin, who graduated from NC State with a dual major in design and textiles, will be talking to us about Color Theory as it applies to textiles. Subjects covered will include the theory behind tried and true color arrangements you can use in your work, a bit of dyeing science (including why there’s no such thing as very dark yellow) and color terms you can use to talk about your work confidently and clearly (these will also be on a handout). Bring a range of colors from your stash for hands-on practice with applying color theory.
Also, don’t forget that we will be collecting this years annual dues.
July Meeting Recap – Charity Project Info
Jul 16th, 2009 by daveyknits
We kicked off our charity project at our last meeting with a visit from Mary Ciminelli, Director of Development, from Florence Crittenton Services (www.fcsnc.org/). She discussed the wonderful services that they provide to single pregnant and no -pregnant adolescents, women and their families throughout the Carolinas. Since 1903, Florence Crittenton has served more than 38,200 mothers, babies and their families. They are in need of knittted/crocheted machine washable and dryable washcloths for women and babies. They also welcome baby blankets and scarves to be given as Christmas gifts to the residents. Ms. Cimineilli said that they encourage visitors who would like to see their residential programs.
Please take this opportunity to design a washcloth and submit it on the Charlotte Knitting Guild group on Ravelry. We plan to have a new pattern each month. This is a chance to design something small and try a different stitch pattern.
We also plan to continue making Hats for Alex so please also bring in the machine washable and dryable soft hats!
Next Guild Meeting – Tuesday, July 7th
Jun 25th, 2009 by daveyknits
Hello everyone!
July 7th is the 2nd program of our new “year”. This year, we have a theme! COLOR! We will be exploring the world of color in many different ways throughout the year. We started off with Miss Babs last month. In October, we will be hosting TheKnitWitch with her wonderful line of hand dyed yarn and yarn bowls! In February & June of next year, we’ll host more dyers and/or enthusiasts of color.
This is just a taste for what is to come. We have a game plan set for the entire coming year! (Planning, who knew?)
July’s meeting will be lead by our wonderful Charity Coordinator, Jeanie Hanover. Just as we did last July, we’ll be kicking off our Charity knitting efforts for the next year and learning all about the secondary charity we will be adding our efforts to. (That’s right, Hats for Alex will continue to be one of our charity efforts.)
We will be kicking off our charity project with a visit by Michelle Reader who is in charge of donations at the Florence Crittenton Services, Inc. These services provide social services for single pregnant and non-pregnant adolescents, women, and their families. They are in need of machine washable and dryable washcloths that can be knitted or crocheted. Cristi will be bringing a sample pattern to the meeting. We also plan to keep making Hats for Alex. They were very happy to receive all of our hats. We are very excited about our charity projects for the coming year!
Each month we will be recommending a pattern to knit. July’s pattern will be the Garterlac cloth. With permission from the wonderful Dave of CriminyJickets, I will have copies ready for you at the meeting. Or you can download a copy now and get knitting! If you would like to get started at the meeting, please bring some dishcloth cotton and appropriate needles.
